MIID’s Participatory River Management project, funded by Oxfam for 17 months, started from 1st January 2016. This project aims to help the riparian communities, civil society, and government representatives cooperate in a constructive, participatory way that ensures that community concerns and needs, including strengthening of women involvement, strengthening the capacity of local communities to manage natural resources and the inclusion of communities’ voices in decisions making about the use of their land and natural resources.

The project will operate in 6 riverine areas in Mon, Kayin and Shan States and in Ayeyarwaddy and Mandalay region. Each of the sites contains different types of land cover and land use, natural and human-related pressures on the ecosystems. The activities include supporting the formation of River Monitoring Groups at the community level, developing research methodology and assessment tools for baseline study and provide capacity building to communities and local township officials.

The main approach for the project is to bring together community representatives, local groups, and local government to make strategic and implementation-related decisions about the project, facilitate to better understand, monitor, and advocate for their own area’s river health through including diverse stakeholders to work together on river resources, sharing technical and non-technical knowledge and their experiences of using of the river resources.
