On World Bamboo Day September 18, bamboo craftsman from MIID’s project areas in Let Maung Gwe village tract, Southern Shan State, visited Yangon to show off their products at the World Bamboo Day event at the Excel River View Hotel.

The product showing was a success, and their stand drew the attention of the organizers who were surprised to learn that they had only been making bamboo handicrafts for a year and a half.

The work of the Tuangyoe villagers received high level attention, in particular from Minister U Ohn Win of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation and other VIP delegates. Award winning actor Wai Lu Kyaw was in attendance and was touched by the story of the Taungyoe craftsmen. The Wai Lu Kyaw foundation sponsored a Chinese trainer, Xin Mo, to visit the project site and conduct a training session the following weekend.

The visit to Yangon also provided an opportunity for villagers to meet staff at MIID head office supporting the project.
