In September 2017, MIID began implementing the project: “Improving Market Opportunities for Smallholder Farmers, Especially Women, in the Pa-O Self-Administered Zone”. The three-year grant agreement in Southern Shan State will focus on 400 smallholder farmers residing in the uplands of the Pa-O Self-Administered Zone. The project will continue until March 2020.
The project centers on supporting smallholders, especially women, as well as those farmers living in isolated and impoverished areas. It funds three major initiatives: training farmers at Farmer Field Schools to improve agricultural practices; creating and strengthening producer associations in order to enhance learning and increase the bargaining power of those farmers; setting up new links and improved access to markets for the farming produce.
MIID will collaborate with private businesses who will bring market expertise as well as access to processing facilities and links to high-value markets to the project. The project is funded by UK Aid through the DaNa Facility (DaNa).
